My first day off in 7 days, finally I can sew some Winter stock for Design A Space (Chapel St, Melbourne), sorry guys, I have been neglecting you! I have cut out some cool cardi designs, blue stripes, navy stripes, red knit, mauve knit – I hope you will be liking them! I woke up this morning and turned on my computer (the procrastination begins haha) and lo and behold I had an email from my contact us page on the website, I LOVE these emails, it’s such a surprise, who is it going to be? Well it was Kerryn from The Gold Coast Bulletin (the local paper) and they are running a story on vintage fashion and want to run a spread on east of grey – wow, I am so STOKED right now. It will be in the Coast Confidential section so look out for it, I will have exact dates for you later.
So now I best stop procrastinating and sew these cardis…..

So you know how I said one thing in your life falls apart, but the other thing in your life thrives and grows – well that is crap! So I am not one step closer to anything, except a pile of fabric cut out for nothing in particular, well not nothing, but not the new boutique I thought was going to happen. Life, it just throws you around and around and around, but I won’t give up, these pieces of fabric will be sewn into pieces of clothing, and they will be loved by somebody out there! Who? I don’t know yet. But I will find another boutique, one with charm and character, charisma and awe, a boutique you just can’t walk past, one that draws you in, tantalizing your every sense, overwhelming your every thought. Do boutiques like this exist anymore? So I do have a place in mind…..you will have to wait and see!

So Friday came, what a full on week at work! The last few weeks have been emotionally draining, long story. So I said to my friend, ‘Something good is going to happen today, I am at work for a reason other than serving customers!’ So anyway, not more than an hour later, a customer waited patiently in the LONG line we always have, to ask for some assistance in choosing fabric to match her pulled apart vintage dress. So off we went to find some fabric and at last settled on a chiffon and satin combo to match back to the beaded pieces off the vintage dress. I mentioned how much I love vintage and also how I run my own clothing label using vintage and recycled fabrics. And alas, this friendly lady owns a store around the corner from my house, selling one off creations from local designers! WOW. So I got on the computer and emailed her the next day to tee up an appointment, called her on Monday, showed her my range – and now I am busy sewing a whole heap of pieces from the ‘Ballerina on Horseback’ range. Yippee! Can you believe how life works, one thing in your life breaks down, yet another grows and thrives. Why can we never have it all! Maybe the things we want aren’t always the things we need? See pics below for a sneak peek of work in progress.

Full colour technical drawings shown to buyers/shops…. they pick which colourways they like..

mmmm where did I put those fabrics????

Then I start cutting fabric….till I’m ready to sew!

Wow! What an amazing night Friday 15 May turned out to be, the planning, stress and hard work leading up to Gold Coast Fashion Week all payed off when the models strutted down the catwalk in my ‘Ballerina on Horseback’ range. They looked absolutely gorgeous and the crowd seemed to love it! You couldn’t get the smile off my face. And the music I had custom made suited the range to the tee, thanks Chris! haha your smile was nearly as big as mine! It was so exciting to see the range on show and have people comment on my creations, having people tell me ‘Oh I loved that dress, I would wear it!’. Hearing people say they would actually wear my designs tells me I am going in the right direction, I mean, I love my stuff, haha, but will people buy and love it as much as I do! That is the deal breaker! divSo here are some pics…..photos by Mike Batterham

So now it is back to the day job for me, yes I do work a part time job, it is not all fashion designing and glamorous parades, I wish…..returning all the beautiful shoes Wittner Robina lent me, did you hear my heart break, oh but I did manage to buy myself 2 pairs, hehe, thanks Wittner, I am now a VIP – get onto this, you get 10% discount every purchase, and hopefully getting bombarded with orders from wanting customers, hint hint! Thanks to all of you who came along.

So this is my first ever blog….east of grey will be showcasing the ‘Ballerina on Horseback’ collection this Friday night 15 May at the Temple Bar Surfers Paradise 9pm, I am up first so don’t be late! I am so excited. Collected the shoes today from the LOVELY ladies at WITTNER Robina (wow they have some amazing shoes at the moment), also collected my custom made tunes by Chris Stewart (http://www.myspace.com/placeholder1234), the first time ever I will be able to use original music for a catwalk show, yay./divdivSo now, instead of going to the launch party tonight I am sewing my outfit for Friday night, taping soles of shoes and organising accessories for each outfit, the final pieces to the puzzle.
So come on, join me for a few drinks this Friday night while taking in the amazing local talent our Gold Coast has to offer on the fashion front.
